One of Mayor Alarcio’s first acts upon assumption of office was to honor two of Laoac’s national cycling champions: RUFINO NERONA GABOT, 1957 Tour of Luzon Champion and GONZALO DE GUZMAN RECODOS, 1963 Tour of Luzon Champion and Winner of the Bronze Medal in the Games of the New Emerging Forces (GANEFO), an international cycling competition held from November 10 to 22, 1963 in Jakarta, Indonesia.
Each champ received a Certificate of Commendation, plus a pledge from the Mayor to work for the passage of a resolution awarding a cash incentive of Five Hundred Pesos (Php500.00) per month for life to each of the two aging yet still sprightly Lawakenian champs and to future Lawakenians who will accomplish national honor and prestige for Laoac. The awarding ceremonies were held after the First Flag Raising of the Laoac LGU on July 5, 2010.
This act, according to the Mayor, establishes his administration’s firm commitment to excellence, and encourages all Lawakenians to work hard and strive to achieve national distinction in any field of endeavor, be it in sports, science, the arts, and even in commerce and industry.

And so it was that, through the thoughtful initiative of a benevolent leader, the names Gabot and Recodos have been formally etched in the annals of Laoac history as the first national champions to bring honor and glory to Laoac.
